Trained by Gérard van Spaendonck, Antoine Chazal (1793-1854) is not only a flower painter, but also a sensitive portraitist, a draughtsman, scientific illustrator, miniaturist and animal drawer.
Extremely meticulous, he drew a Notice de mes travaux, summarizing from 1815 to 1854 his painted, drawn and engraved work. This autograph document, reproduced and retranscribed, allowed the author of this catalogue raisonné surveying and mentioning more than 200 paintings, half of thousand drawings and a hundred or so miniatures. This book also chronologically studies his work as an illustrator and calls up the personality of his brother André, violent husband of the feminist Flora Tristan and Paul Gauguin's grandfather.
