A history painter, Charles Meynier was first and foremost a masterful draughtsman, a creator of subjects, seeking out classical sources for richly illustrated episodes. His drawings reflect a great culture, an in-depth study of Antiquity and an unusual literary knowledge, confirmed by the importance of his library and his collection of prints.
Published as part of the exhibitions presented in 2008 at the Bibliothèque-musée Marmottan, Boulogne-Billancourt, and at the Musée Magnin, Dijon, this retrospective of the work of the painter Charles Meynier reveals the teeming artistic life from the Revolution to the Restoration.
