Entropy, from the greek entropia, means transformation. It perfectly covers the work of the Portuguese artist Vhils (born Alexandre Farto, 1987) who, by sculpting anonymous portraits on abandoned walls, tries to give them a second life, to inverse the process of defacement, giving back all its value to a damaged support. His specialty is the sgraffito, an engraving technique. He removes coats instead of adding them, and figures were born from this subtraction. The artist also explores and experiments other techniques and media as acid, explosives, serigraphy, portraits sculpted in polystyrene block, or collage of advertising posters recovered in the streets of the city.
This book reflects Vhils's work, whose works all have in common to show the mutual influences between a city and its inhabitants.
