From the Antiquity, then from the Renaissance until nowadays, artificial caves constitute a key part in garden creation all over Europe. Thousands of caves were built during the last five centuries, from small niches housing little fountains to enormous chaos turned into sublime landscapes. Lots of them disappeared, because of the extreme fragility of these decors, but wonderful realizations still testify about a constant interest, notably in Germany, France, Italy, UK, Portugal, Russia, Finland and Ukraine.
Through more than hundred illustrated examples, this book aims to explore the issues of the continuous fascination for garden caves and to bring to light the formal and technical inventiveness to which they led. A hundred iconographic documents - encyclopaedic illustrations, allegorical painting, portraits, theatre sets, etc. - enable to evoke their artistic, literary, scientific, technical, religious, philosophical or anthropological backgrounds.
