First Avant-Garde movement of the 20th century, Fauvism is characterized by its violence, its brevity - less than three years - and by the strength of its influence on European Expressionist movements. It was born from the scandal of the exhibition of paintings by Matisse, Vlaminck, Derain, Camoin, Marquet and Manguin at the 1905 Salon d'Automne. After 1905, they were joined by Dufy, Braque and Friesz.
Fauvism then spread all around Europe thanks to numerous exhibitions in foreign countries, purchases of European or American art lovers, and to the spreading of the Notes d'un peintre by Matisse (published in 1908) by his students in Germany and Russia.
This book offers to recount the brief history of this movement by replacing it in its historical context, and by putting forward the careers and works of its artists.
