Exhibition at the Jewish Museum, New York, 15 September 2017 - 4 February 2018

This book is the catalogue of the first exhibition in the United States to focus on Amedeo Modigliani's early drawings made in the years after he arrived in Paris in 1906. Acquired directly from the artist by Dr. Paul Alexandre, his close friend and first patron, these works illuminate Modigliani's heritage as an Italian Sephardic Jew as pivotal to understanding his artistic output.
Through the drawings from the Alexandre collections but also paintings, sculptures and drawings from other collections, this catalogue reveals how Modigliani's preoccupation with identity spurred the artist to reconceive the modern portrait.
