Exhibition at the Musée Cernuschi, Paris, 24 February - 17 June 2007

Europe did not wait until the 18th century to discover the Far East and its arts. Silks, lacquers and porcelain had been imported in large numbers since the 16th century. In the 17th century, varnishers developed processes that made it possible to obtain objects comparable to lacquerware.

At the beginning of the 18th century, a new phenomenon occurred. Europeans were still trying to discover the secrets of the Far East, but were no longer content to imitate them. Works from the East stimulated the imagination of artists and craftsmen. Fancy Chinese figures were placed on tables and consoles; their silhouettes decorated the bodies of vases, their ceremonies were reproduced on tapestries and painted decorations, and Chinese pavilions were set up in the gardens

This exhibition catalogue, which is extensively illustrated with works by Boucher, Pillement, and the manufactures of Rouen, Saint-Cloud and Meissen, invites you to explore this phenomenon.
