This book has been made possible thanks to the rediscovering of the archives of René Gabriel (1899-1950) at the Ecole des arts décoratifs, which allowed to give a new light to the work of this interior designer, a major figure of social modernism and of the years of reconstruction.
René Gabriel knew his first achievements as a young student by designing and producing his own wall-papers. Furniture designer, he received the Blumenthal grant and participated to 1925 International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts with Francis Jourdain and the Modernists.
Unlike the great figures of the 1920s, René Gabriel rejected luxury and ostentation. In addition to collaborations with prestigious Houses - Nobilis, Leroy, Follot -, he played a key role in reconstruction design, notably with Auguste Perret for the reconstruction of Le Havre.
René Gabriel is now known as a precursor of industrial design.
