Born into a family of Calvinist ministers, Vincent Van Gogh dreamt for some time to devote his life to preaching before turning to painting when he got 27 and dedicating to it until his death. This path and the place accorded to religious issues in the artist's letters have suggested that Van Gogh was a painter of God.
However, from 1880, the artist has declared himself as an atheist. Through circumstances and meetings, this unbelief remained a constant of his thought which guided his life choices and decisively orientated his work.
Revisiting his whole body of works and based on a renewed reading of Van Gogh's correspondence, this book offers an unprecedented insight on the relation of the artist with the faith.
