Daniel Dumonstier was born in a family of six « pencil » portraitists who have illustrated the reigns of the last Valois and the first Bourbons between 1560 and 1660. Portraitist of the King and the Court, he let an exceptional iconographic testimony of the society and major participants of Henri IV and Louis XIII's time. This book includes a part devoted to the life of Dumonstier, portraitist, book and music lover, poet and libertine, and a catalogue his work which allows understanding the transition between the Renaissance portrait and the “Classic age” one.
