Exhibition at the Petit Palais, Paris, 21 June - 14 October 2018

This exhibition catalogue tells the little-known story of the artists who left France to seek refuge in London during and after the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune. Confronted with the British culture and climate, these expatriates exercised their creativity in a new way, seizing the opportunities offered to them by the capital of a booming empire, recreating in their works the banks of the Thames, the green parks, the cricket pitches or the social evenings of high society.

This book brings together the major artists of this period, Daubigny and Legros who arrived as scouts, then Monet, Pissarro, Tissot, Sisley and later the young Derain. The sculptors Carpeaux and Dalou, joined by Rodin, and those who supported them, patrons, art dealers and British artists, shared this English experience. Encouraged by a few daring collectors, painters and sculptors contributed to the evolution of the English art scene.
