Exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, New York, 2 July, 2021 - 13 February, 2022
The Victorian-era furniture and decorative arts firm Kimbel & Cabus was formed in 1862 in New York by German-born cabinetmaker Anthony Kimbel (1822-1895) and French-born cabinetmaker Joseph Cabus (1824-1898). The firm produced an amazing variety of Modern Gothic furniture and worked in a panoply of styles to satisfy the broadest range of markets. They also produced one of the first photographic catalogues for use as a selling tool.
This volume, catalogue of the first museum exhibition devoted to this influential and enterprising partnership, reconstructs the story of Kimbel & Cabus using period documents including advertisements, city directories, census and credit reports, and other printed materials alongside new photography.
