Exhibition at the Albertina, Vienna, 8 March - 14 July 2024

Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) is known for his stereotypical blondes, war heroes and comic strip characters with speech bubbles. His cartoon-like aesthetic, using bright colours, clear lines and Ben Day to mimic the printing techniques of cheap comics, had a considerable influence on the American art scene of the 1960s.

This catalogue of the retrospective organised to mark the artist's 100th birthday brings together more than 90 of his most famous works - sculptures and prints - from leading public institutions and private collections. The book examines his pioneering use of Benday, his interiors and landscapes, his re-staging of still lifes, his expansion into sculpture and ceramics, and works that pay homage to famous artists such as Picasso, Monet and Van Gogh, Kirchner and Pollock.
