From the 1900s until the Second World War, sculpture was at its peak in France. Like painting, it was widely appreciated and collected. Neglected nowadays, it is often studied only by historians whose theses lie dormant in libraries.

For the period 1920-1940, this dictionary brings together more than two thousand sculptors, French or foreign residents, who worked in France and presented their works at Salons, in public or private exhibitions, and in galleries. After a general presentation of the artistic context of the time, a few lines, information or brief biographies allow us to discover sculptors who are mostly unknown to the general public.

From the most traditional, still imbued with the classics of the 18th century, to the most modern, in search of non-figuration, all these creators worked together or knew each other, and, despite the important differences in vision, participated in the formidable advance of the plastic arts which was to lead to contemporary art.
