Exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, 19 October 2022 - 5 March 2023

For Edward Hopper, New York City, where he lived for six decades, was a city that existed in the mind rather than on the map, a place that took shape through lived experience, memory, and the collective imagination.

Through previously unpublished paintings, drawings, prints, and documents, this exhibition catalogue reveals the American artist's relationship with New York and how Hopper's experience of New York's spaces, sensations, and architecture shaped his vision and provided the backdrop for his work.

Drawing on the vast resources of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the largest repository of Hopper's work, and the recently acquired gift of the Sanborn Hopper Archive, this book presents more than 300 illustrations and new insights from established and emerging scholars.
