This book recounts the secrets of enamellers, their material and techniques.
In the first part, it studies the history of enamel on metal, from their origins, probably in the Mediterranean basin around the end of the 15th century BC, until the 19th century.
The volume presents then in a second experimental part the secret techniques of enamellers, thanks to scientific results obtained by the laboratory of the Centre de recherche et de restauration des musées de France (C2RMF) regarding the chemical analysis of the material used in these works, and a study of fabrication techniques; researches done for nine productions of enamels on metal from the 9th to the 19th century - from Carolingian cloisonné pieces to Limoges painted ones -, covering thus nearly all the different techniques known in the West.
A rich iconography includes photographic and radiographic details of the works, and also complete tables of chemical analysis of metal and glass for each studied production.
