In the first decade of the 20th century, the German artist Emil Nolde developed an innovative style that is at the origin of German Expressionism. The colour, used in complete freedom, and the drawing, incisive and uncompromising, are at the service of a vision of wonder and tragedy, where the feeling of nature and the mystery of origins are expressed. From 1937 onwards, he was considered by the Nazis to be a "degenerate artist" and was banned from painting in 1941, before being rehabilitated after the war.
This exhibition catalogue, which brings together contributions from the best Nolde specialists, an abundant iconography and a detailed chronology, is the first complete publication in French on the artist.
