In eloquent paintings in saturated colours and woodcuts with an unprecedented economy of means, Félix Vallotton created some of the most emblematic images of fin de siècle Paris, depicting caustic snapshots of everyday Parisian life. He also painted portraits, still lifes, nudes, landscapes and elegant interiors inspired by his family environment. Many of them give off a vague impression of unease.

This exhibition catalogue highlights the originality of Vallotton's work through some fifty paintings and many of the artist's most important xylographs, whose subjects range from street demonstrations to the atrocities of the First World War. Several essays explore Vallotton's technical discoveries and his complex place in the history of early modern art.
