Listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1981, the Château de Fontainebleau is without doubt the richest royal and then imperial residence that France still has, both in terms of the historical breadth to which it bears witness and the excellence of the decor and collections it contains.

This monograph, produced by a team of château curators and researchers with photographs by Marc Walter, attempts to give an accurate account of its various facets. After a text devoted to the architecture and gardens, the book follows the chronological evolution of the château, through its interior fittings and furniture from the Renaissance to the Third Republic, and then to the creation of the Musée Napoléon in 1986.
