Francis Bacon (1909-1992) is widely regarded as Britain's greatest modern painter. He developed a way of portraying the human body which was unique. During his career, he destroyed many of his paintings; only about half of the 584 that survive can be said to be accessible or in circulation, through exhibitions and publications.
This catalogue raisonné in 5 volumes presents for the first time Bacon's entire output, notably 100 previously unpublished paintings. The first volume includes an introduction, a chronology, and an index, volumes 2, 3 & 4 contain the catalogue raisonné itself, where each work is fully documented and reproduced in colour, and the latter volume gives a catalogue of Bacon's sketches and an illustrated bibliography.
