Exhibition at the Musée du Pays vaurais, Lavaur, 1 July - 20 September 2015
The painter Henri Rousseau (Cairo, 1875 - Aix-en-Provence, 1933) was one of the greatest French orientalists, in the tradition of Delacroix and Fromentin. For more than thirty years, this tireless traveller surveyed the land, worked tirelessly and painted with brio Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, but also Provence and the Camargue, his classical style and virtuoso brushwork distancing him from the avant-garde.
Bringing together both a monograph and the catalogue raisonné of the work, a veritable scientific tool for approaching the artist, this richly illustrated work constitutes an important milestone in the discovery of this painter whose flamboyant art unites the two shores of the Mediterranean.
