Exhibition at the Musée d'art et d'histoire, Brussels, 6 October 2023 - 14 April 2023
Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956) was a versatile architect and designer with an innovative spirit but a strong attachment to tradition. He was much more than just the founder of the Wiener Werkstätte. With their timeless beauty, his creations - including the Purkersdorf Sanatorium and the Palais Stoclet in Brussels - bear witness not only to the importance he had in his own time, but also to his influence on hundreds of designers to this day.
Richly illustrated with pieces of furniture, objects, drawings, textiles, photographs, sketches and documents, this book, which is both a monograph and a catalogue of the retrospective devoted to Hoffmann, pays particular attention to his creative process and his little-known use of colour. The book provides an overview of the Viennese architect's sixty-year career.
