Exhibition at the Fundación Mapfre, Madrid, 11 February - 7 May 2023
Ahead of her time when it came to ecology and women's rights, the Anglo-Mexican artist Leonora Carrington (1917-2011) was a key figure in the 20th-century Surrealist movement.
Rebelling against convention, authority and her own heritage, Carrington created a body of work brimming with artistic experimentation, occult absurdities and a dark, ironic humour that broadened our understanding of the world.
This catalogue of the first retrospective devoted in Spain to Leonora Carrington pays tribute to this versatile and eclectic artist, who was always on the lookout for new forms of expression. The book brings together a wide range of her work (paintings, drawings and tapestries) and offers a chronological account of her life, as well as a study of the most important themes in her work: training and early influences in England and Florence, contact with the Surrealists in Paris, a stay in Saint-Martin-d'Ardčche, traumatic experiences in Spain, immigration to New York and her new homeland, Mexico. The reproductions are punctuated by archive documents, book extracts and documentary photographs.
