The Italian trend for furniture decorated with fine stone mosaics was introduced into France in the 17th century by Mazarin. Seduced, Louis XIV, anxious to surpass the magnificence of foreign arts, decided in 1668 to create a hard stone workshop in his royal factory of Gobelins.
Three centuries later, this book devoted to the rare pieces of furniture that remain bears witness to the splendour desired by the king.
