Andrea Mantegna (1431 - 1506) was one of the most unusual figures of the Italian Quattrocento. His work combined Humanism and references to Antiquity. Born in Padua, husband of the sister of the Bellini painters, he moved at the age of 40 to Mantua, at the court of Ludovic de Gonzague. He realised there the chronicle of life in Gonzagues' court, The Bedroom of Husband and Wife, one of the major works of the Italian Renaissance. He also was a great draughtsman and engraver, as shown in the catalogue raisonne at the end of the book.
