The visual arts of Oceania tell a multitude of stories about origins, ancestral power, performance and initiation.
This exhibition catalogue explores the deep-rooted connections between Austronesian-speaking peoples, whose ancestral lands span island Southeast Asia, Australia, Papua New Guinea and the island archipelagos of the North and East Pacific. It emphasizes indigenous perspectives, as well as multidisciplinary research in art history, ethnography and archaeology, to provide an intimate look at Oceania, its art and culture.
Photographs highlight more than 130 objects: ancestral figures carved in ceremonial houses, imposing slit drums, tortoise shell masks or polished whale ivory breastplates.
