Exhibition at the Menil Drawing Institute, Houston, 18 November 2022 - 12 March 2023
Throughout his long and prolific career, Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) maintained a fascination with art on paper. His multi-faceted drawing practice was integral to his search for a personal and spontaneous language of the mark.
From the Mexican Sketchbook of the early 1940s to the Joyce Sketchbook of the 1980s, this exhibition catalogue provides an overview of Motherwell's work on paper and highlights the way in which the artist blended the accidental and the intentional in the creative gesture. An essay explores how the artist's practice of 'automatic drawing' combined with his love of paper and ink to create these unique works.
