Exhibition at the Musée Fabre, Montpellier, 25 June - 16 October 2016 ;
then at the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, 15 November 2016 - 5 March 2017

Frédéric Bazille (1841-1870) died before turning 29 in the 1870 war, far from his home town of Montpellier, having painted for barely eight years. His early death prevented him from participating in the flowering of Impressionism alongside his friends Monet and Renoir. One hundred and fifty years later, the decisive role he played in the emergence of Impressionism is beginning to be measured.

Through 65 paintings, this exhibition catalogue studies Bazille's artistic evolution in relation to the problems of the avant-garde painting of the 1860s.
