One of the most prolific masters of early fifteenth-century Florence, Guido di Pietro, known as Fra Angelico (1390/1395-1455) is one of the painters celebrated by the history of art. His exceptionally beautiful works - altarpieces, frescoes and manuscripts produced over nearly four decades - have long been shrouded in mystery. It was as a tribute to his piety that the Dominican religious order to which he belonged nicknamed him Angelicus pictor, "the angelic painter".

This monograph places Fra Angelico's paintings within the visual, historical and religious culture of the Renaissance. The book presents a selection of high-quality reproductions, as well as a clear, detailed text that explains how Fra Angelico conformed to the particular constraints of each of his commissions.
