From its first opening in 1793, the Louvre museum owned an important set of mantel clocks and mounted vases in ormolu, most of them from a royal provenience. These objects, scattered during a while, came back in the Louvre with numerous other furnishing bronzes. The collection was later enriched by donations and acquisitions, all of them of a quality worthy of the first pieces.
This book on the Louvre furnishing bronzes follows the two volumes published in 1993 devoted to the Louvre furniture ; both of them were written by department curators under Daniel Alcouffe's direction. The most important part of the collection is presented in this book: 164 pieces with, for each of them, an historical note and sumptuous photographs with numerous details where the bronzes and their gilt exercise the fascination wanted by the artists who created them.
