L'art abstrait géométrique : écrits
Auteur(s) : Serge Lemoine
From Piet Mondrian to Frank Stella, this volume brings together 400 essays by Serge Lemoine devoted to geometric abstract art, the leading figures of this movement and the groups he has seen emerge from 1969 to the present day.
The historical figures – Mondrian, van Doesburg, Schwitters, Calder, Herbin, as well as Max Bill and Richard Paul Lohse, François Morellet and Aurélie Nemours – appear alongside lesser-known but equally essential figures, such as Carmelo Arden Quin, Almir Mavignier and Vera Molnár. The development of the major movements – De Stijl, Purism, Concrete Art, Unism, Kinetism, Minimal Art… – is explored alongside that of artist associations and groups such as Cercle et Carré, Zero, Madí and the GRAV.
Whilst highlighting the diversity of artistic practices, the evolution of artistic sensibilities over time and geographical contingencies, Serge Lemoine explores, across 17 chapters, the theoretical and visual issues that shaped this movement, as evident in the paintings of Fernand Léger and Willi Baumeister as well as in the architecture of Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius and Gerrit Rietveld, as well as in design, the applied arts and photography. An illustrated supplement and an index of names, journals and key locations associated with this movement accompany this collection of essays.
