Sèvres : une passion Rothschild
Auteur(s) : Oriane Beaufils, Viviane Mesqui (dir.)
Exhibition at the Galeries Nationales des Gobelins, Paris, 17 April – 26 July 2026
From Frankfurt to Paris, via Vienna, Naples and London, the Rothschilds amassed some of the most spectacular 18th-century Sèvres porcelain: vases in the shapes of ships, animals or architectural forms, featuring vibrant colours and masterful decoration. Thanks to their generosity, many of these treasures have found their way into French public collections and major international museums.
This exhibition catalogue marks a turning point in the study of the Rothschild collections, both in terms of the significance of the research and discoveries made for the exhibition, and in terms of its beauty and the diversity of approaches it offers. The Sèvres porcelain collections of the various branches of the family are examined in depth, placed in context and explored in relation to historical, technical and aesthetic considerations. The book reveals the scale of the Rothschild family’s collections, particularly those held at the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild and bequeathed to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1934.
