Édouard Pignon : créer un monde

A leading figure of the ‘New School of Paris’, Édouard Pignon (1905–1993) is regarded as one of the key figures in French painting of the second half of the 20th century. His training as a painter went hand in hand with an early intellectual and political commitment: he joined the Association of Revolutionary Writers and Artists (AEAR) in 1932, the Communist Party in 1933, and became a member of the group ‘Young Painters of the French Tradition’ in 1941.

Pignon’s unique position lies in the fact that his work—neither figurative nor abstract—is not confined to a reproduction of the visible but, rather, transcends the constraints of reality to reimagine the world and present a more accurate image of it. The artist established a serial mode of production which, from then on, structured his work around major themes that he explored in a prolific body of graphic and pictorial work, revisited over the decades.

This exhibition catalogue presents a comparison of the 58 paintings from the donation received by the Musée de l’Hospice Saint-Roch with the drawings and sketchbooks already held by the museum, thereby offering a comprehensive and vivid insight into the artist’s work.
