Exhibition at the Magen H. Gallery, New York, 2 November 2022 - 17 January 2023

An idealist architect, Hervé Baley (1933-2010) always advocated the poetry of space, going against the grain of the post-war French trend towards modernism and its rationalist rigour. His discovery of Frank Lloyd Wright, while studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the 1950s, marked a turning point in his creative career.

This catalogue of the first exhibition devoted to Baley's work includes some fifty pieces, created between the 1960s and 1990, in France and Morocco. It demonstrates the direct link between Baley's furniture production and his architectural approach.

Mainly in wood, with dynamic constructions, low lines and a rejection of right angles, the works included in this book demonstrate the architecture and lifestyle that Baley sought to promote. Created specifically for different projects, from his own studio house in the 1960s to the Cansado de Miferma project in Mauritania (c. 1960) or a large private estate in the 1990s, these works embody the architect's entire oeuvre: impractical, contrasting, subtle and always in tune with the environment for which they were created.
