Throughout his career, Albert Marquet (1875-1947) never stopped painting the Seine, in all seasons, under the most varied skies, generally in its most ordinary moments. Monet, who saw in him an heir to Impressionism, bought a painting from him and invited him to Giverny. Matisse said, "When I see Hokusai, I think of our Marquet - and vice versa.
Paris, Le Havre, Honfleur, Trouville, Fécamp or Dieppe are associated with friendships, notably those of Matisse, Manguin, Signac or Dufy. The omnipresent port is the place where the simplification of forms is played out, themselves blurred by the reflections of the ever-changing water and by the vagaries of the weather.
This book, published on the occasion of the MuMa exhibition, contains a selection of Marquet's works dedicated to the Seine.
Event: Exhibition at MuMa, Le Havre, 22 April - 24 September 2023
