Eugène Leroy : Peindre
Auteur(s) : Collectif
Exhibition at the Musée d'Art moderne de la ville de Paris, 15 April - 28 August 2022
A solitary artist who lived from 1958 until his death in Wasquehal, on the fringes of the Parisian art scene, Eugène Leroy (1910-2000) earned his living until 1963 by teaching literature in a secondary school in Roubaix.
Throughout his career, Leroy studied the traditional subjects of painting: nudes, portraits and landscapes, which he sometimes reworked over several years. He created his works by successive additions of thick layers of oil paint, whose agglomeration and touches tend to confuse the figure and the background. His best-known works are on the theme of the seasons (Les Quatre Saisons, 1998-1999) and are landscape-like, although human figures can be seen emerging from the magma of the painting.
This voluminous exhibition catalogue, published in large format, presents each work on a full page for an immersion in the singular work of this artist.
