Exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao, 29 May – 12 October 2026
The work of Jasper Johns (1930–), a leading figure in contemporary art, explores the boundaries between representation and meaning through recognisable symbols such as flags, numbers and letters, thereby addressing issues of perception, language and reality. Through a practice encompassing painting, sculpture and printmaking, he has developed an experimental approach that transforms the image into a field of conceptual inquiry.
His work, which is analytical and self-reflective in nature, played a key role in the development of Pop Art, Minimalism and Conceptual Art, and has exerted a decisive influence on subsequent generations. The result is a vast, complex and profoundly influential body of work.
This exhibition catalogue traces the American artist’s seven decades of creative output and the evolution of his work, from the iconic flags, targets, numbers and maps of the 1950s—which marked a decisive break with Abstract Expressionism—to the formal and conceptual explorations of his most recent series.
