The friendship between Jean Lurçat (1892–1966) and Pierre Chareau (1883–1950), two major figures in French decorative arts, gave rise to a fruitful collaboration, combining the colourful tapestries of the former with the modernist furniture of the latter. Among their creations, the “MP 169” sofa and the “MF 1002” armchair offer a unique fusion of painting and design.
As Paris celebrates the centenary of the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, and on the occasion of the reopening of the Lurçat House-Workshop, one hundred years after its construction, this book highlights a singular friendship: that of two men united by creation, whose complicity spanned more than twenty years. It demonstrates how Lurçat infused Chareau's work with a touch of refinement and originality.
