From 1860 to 1947, the landscape architects Achille (1866-1947) and Henri (1841-1902) Duchêne lived only in and for gardens. Pioneers of the revival of the classical French garden style, whose finest principles they used, the Duchenes' work also bears witness to great inventiveness and an acute awareness of the challenges of architecture and the modern world.
The Duchenes, father and son, have worked all over the world, from Europe to Argentina and the United States, from Russia to Turkey. Today, 85% of their achievements are still alive - creations, major restorations or reinventions. Among the best known are Champs-sur-Marne, Vaux-le-Vicomte, Courances and Voisins in France, Blenheim Palace in Great Britain and Nordkirchen in Germany.
Covering a century of landscape history, this reference work devoted to the Duchenes relates the birth of a style in the architecture and art of the garden. Their most representative works are reproduced and commented on, notably Blenheim Palace, Voisins, Nordkirchen, le Marais, Vaux-le-Vicomte and Condé-sur-Iton.
