Leonardo / Dürer: Renaissance Masterdrawings on Colored Ground

Auteur(s) : Ralph Gleis, Achim Gnann, Christof Metzger
Exhibition at the Albertina, Vienna, 7 March – 9 June 2025
Mythology, religious faith and history, images of everyday life and travel scenes were the central themes of the 15th century and occupy a prominent place in the art represented in the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci and Albrecht Dürer. It is in their interplay of light and dark tones on coloured backgrounds that these drawings, executed with breathtaking virtuosity, reveal their magic.
This exhibition catalogue brings together masterpieces of drawing by Leonardo da Vinci and Albrecht Dürer alongside works by their contemporaries, such as Albrecht Altdorfer and Raphael, illustrating the vast expressive possibilities offered by drawing. The book explores how this technique asserted its independence and what made it so popular and successful.
