When Joan Miró (1893–1983) settled permanently in Mallorca in 1956, the island’s isolation became the setting for a space of absolute freedom. In the studio designed by the architect Josep Lluís Sert and in his home at Son Boter, he invented a new way of painting: more instinctive, more stripped-back, more physical. Forms became lighter, marks became a language, colours breathed. The island acted as a catalyst for creativity, a revelation. Nourished by the Mediterranean light, the silence, the materials and the landscapes, the Catalan artist underwent a profound inner metamorphosis, arriving at a style of painting free from any narrative, where the brushstroke becomes poetry.
