This monograph traces a century and a half of French tapestry history through the story of the Pinton workshop, founded in Felletin in 1867. From the interior designers and decorators of the 1920s to the contemporary revival, it recounts how exceptional craftsmanship has continually reinvented itself through collaboration with artists. Lurçat, Picasso, Le Corbusier, Calder, Albers and Stella thus feature alongside Claire Tabouret, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Beatriz Milhazes, Glenn Brown and Louise Bonnet.
This volume also reveals little-known episodes, such as the creations of milliner Claude Saint-Cyr, and revisits Pinton’s monumental projects, from Coventry Cathedral to the Sydney Opera House. Richly illustrated with tapestries, artists’ sketches and previously unpublished archive material, it shines a light on a workshop where tradition, creativity and modernity have been in dialogue for nearly 160 years.
