Exhibition at the Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti Foundation - Palazzo Mignanelli 23, Rome, 25 May - 12 October 2025
In the 1950s, Valentino Garavani began creating red garments which, by identifying a colour with their shape, embodied the dynamic vitality of the new world, renewing elegance and casualness: his red creations are, through their synthetic, individual and social significance, guiding signals that mark a turning point in history and give it historical clarity.
This catalogue of the inaugural exhibition of the Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti Foundation follows the phenomenology of red in painting and, simultaneously, Valentino's reds: a certain red that becomes inseparable from his shapes, to the point of affirming the term ‘Valentino red’ beyond the realm of fashion. It includes, among others, works by Francis Bacon, Basquiat, Louise Bourgeois, Damien Hirst, Joseph Kosuth, Pablo Picasso, Mark Rothko and Andy Warhol dedicated to or inextricably linked to ‘Valentino red’.
