The Shakers : A World in the Making

Auteur(s) : Collectif
Exhibition at the Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein, 7 June – 28 September 2025
Founded in the 18th century, the Christian community of the Shakers, an American free church, advocated the principles of social equality, communal property and pacifism, considering work and design to be essential expressions of their faith. The Shakers' radically simple and functional objects have profoundly influenced modern design, inspiring generations of artists, architects and designers to this day.
This exhibition catalogue explores how the Shakers gave rise to meticulously designed furniture and vernacular architecture that continues to resonate centuries later. It brings together a wide range of Shaker furniture, architectural elements, tools, and commercial products. Works by contemporary artists and designers, including Chris Halstrøm, Christien Meindertsma, and Kameelah Janan Rasheed, enter into dialogue with the historical pieces on display, reflecting the enduring relevance of the Shakers.
The publication includes a rich selection of thematic essays, detailed studies of selected objects, and personal reflections from the artists who contributed to the book. The photographs offer a fresh look at one of the most fascinating communal experiences of the last few centuries.
