Vilhelm Hammershoi: Painting as Poetry
Auteur(s) : Henrik Wivel
Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864–1916) is internationally renowned for the interior paintings he created at 30 Strandgade in Copenhagen, the house he shared with his wife Ida from 1898 to 1909. Rendered in a beautiful range of greys, these peaceful rooms also served as the artist's studio. Ida appears repeatedly as a favourite motif, often from behind.
Based on a new interpretation of Hammershøi's characters, interiors, architecture and landscapes, this book paints a portrait of an artist who used light to shape his environment and open the way to an inner world. It also explores the artistic ideas of the Danish painter's contemporaries and their resonance today.
