Wifredo Lam is world-renowned as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, alongside Picasso and Max Ernst, who were his friends. Over the past thirty years, countless studies have explored the different facets of his painting, but they have yet to be brought together and compared.

This book retraces the path of the Cuban painter of multiple origins and the dramas of his time. It describes an itinerant artist, open and curious about everything, non-conformist and protesting, tormented and confident. He evokes the man of encounters and the friend of poets - among them Césaire, Breton, Char... - as well as his political commitment against fascism, racism and all dictatorships.
