"I was shocked to discover in Assisi, in the Basilica of Saint Francis, scrupulously monochrome, plain and blue frescoes that I think I can attribute to Giotto". (Yves Klein)
Assisi, Venice, Rome and Milan had a profound effect on the life of Yves Klein (1928-1962), whose first exhibition abroad, Proposte monochrome, epoca blu, was held in Milan at the Galleria Apollinaire in 1957.
Produced in collaboration with the Yves Klein Archives, this book presents almost 150 archive documents, photographs and correspondence relating to the 'artist of the blue'. Through Klein's travels, exchanges and encounters, it reveals the links between the artist and Italy, and the relationships he forged with his contemporaries, including Lucio Fontana and Piero Manzoni.
