Art Brut : le guide

Auteur(s) : Céline Delavaux

Coined by Jean Dubuffet in 1945, the term “art brut”, or outsider art, refers to art produced by individuals who are not trained in artistic culture, and are therefore often marginalized or excluded from the conventional art scene. These artists produce original, often poignant and disturbing works, uninfluenced by the canons of mainstream art. Long ignored by art history, Art Brut made its entry into general literature in the 90s, before experiencing a museum explosion in the 2000s, where it rubs shoulders with modern and contemporary works.

This book offers a broad overview of Art Brut: it questions its definition, examines the heterogeneous nature of its works, and establishes its link with culture and society, supporting its argument through the works of 20 of its leading artists.
