Exhibition at the Camille Claudel Museum, Nogent-sur-Seine, 13 September 2025 – 4 January 2026
Since her rediscovery in the 1980s, Camille Claudel has inspired major monographic exhibitions. Her fame today is such that one might mistakenly believe she was the only female sculptor of her time. However, around 1900, many others followed in her footsteps and, despite the obstacles associated with being women, made a name for themselves in the field of sculpture.
This exhibition catalogue brings together the creations of some twenty sculptors, including Charlotte Besnard, Marie Cazin, Madeleine Jouvray, Jessie Lipscomb, Agnès de Frumerie, Anna Bass and Jane Poupelet. French or foreign, often daughters or wives of artists, they were Camille Claudel's studio companions, friends, or sometimes rivals. Some preceded her, others succeeded her. The book sheds light on the diversity of their careers, the solidarity of their studios, their struggles for recognition, and the emergence of unique aesthetics.
