Exhibition at the Beyeler Foundation, Riehen/Basel, 25 January – 25 May 2026

The work of Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) bridges the gap between Impressionism and abstraction. By deliberately breaking with the traditional rules of perspective, Cézanne reinvented painting as a construction of colours, forms and structures. His radical approach laid the foundations for Cubism and played a decisive role in the emergence of pictorial abstraction.

This richly illustrated catalogue of the Fondation Beyeler's first exhibition devoted to Cézanne focuses on the final and most significant phase of the artist's career, highlighting the central themes of his late work: still lifes, portraits, landscapes and iconic scenes of bathers. With around eighty oil paintings and watercolours, the book offers an in-depth study of form, light and colour in the work of an artist who profoundly influenced generations of artists and continues to resonate in contemporary art.
